Cymatoderma sclerotioides is a saprotrophic polypore species that is found growing on the forest floor, using buried heart wood as a substrate. The species is considered rare, as it has just 25 occurrences and its basidiomata are conspicuous. Its distribution is known for Brazilian Amazon (Mato Grosso and Roraima states), Peru and Colombia. The species also occurs in tropical montane forests of Panamá and Costa Rica. It is expected that the species is distributed throughout Amazon and in other areas of tropical montane forests in Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica. The species habitat and its population are threatened mainly by deforestation caused by agriculture and human occupation, with a projected decline of up to 20% in Csclerotioides population in the next 20 years. Therefore, the species is considered Near Threatened based on the IUCN assessment criteria.
