Brazilian Threatened Fungal Species Collection (Coleção de Fungos Ameaçados do Brasil) – CFAB MIND.Funga

The Brazilian Threatened Fungal Species Collection (Coleção de Fungos Ameaçados do Brasil in Portuguese – CFAB MIND.Funga) was established in the current threatening scenario for the Brazilian Funga as the first culture collection exclusively dedicated to developing an ex-situ strategy to conserve the threatened Brazilian Funga genetic resources. The collection is maintained by MICOLAB/CCB/UFSC (Mycology laboratory at the Federal University of Santa Catarina) and it is financially supported by the Mohammed Bin Zayed Species Conservation FundThe Indianapolis Zoological Society, CNPq, and FAPESC. It also receives scientific support from the IUCN SSC Brazil Fungal Specialist Group.

CFAB MIND.Funga process from collecting species to preserving the Brazilian Funga genetic resources.

The CFAB MIND.Funga team conducts strategic expeditions to find threatened Brazilian fungal species to isolate and establish pure cultures in the collection. Also, we are seeking to understand which are the ideal conditions to maintain these cultures, developing culture maintenance protocols that can be utilized by other collections and research groups. To guarantee that the Brazilian Funga genetic diversity is protected, we plan to send clones from our cultures to other reference collections throughout Brazil.

CFAB MIND.Funga Team

Daniela Werner Ribeiro – Technical Coordinator

Daniela is a forestry engineer and PhD in Vegetal Genetic Resources. She is familiar with in-vitro cultivation techniques and is applying her knowledge into collection coordination, being a post-doc at MIND.Funga.

Eloisa Leopoldo – Technician

Eloisa is a biologist working with Hymenochaetaceae taxonomy and systematics, also being involved in scientific dissemination at MIND.Funga. She is involved in isolating and maintaining cultures at CFAB MIND.Funga.

Kelmer Martins-Cunha – Technician

Kelmer is a biologist working with soil fungal community ecology using high-throughput sequencing technologies. He is also involved in fungal conservation through the application of the IUCN criteria. It is also responsible for isolating, maintaining, and managing cultures at the collection.

Genivaldo Alves-Silva – Expedition Coordinator

Genivaldo holds a Ph.D. in Botany, dedicated to Hymenochaetales taxonomy and systematics. Currently, he has a post-doc position at MIND.Funga, being involved in the scientific coordination of the research group. At CFAB MIND.Funga is responsible for coordinating expeditions and other logistics.

Elisandro Ricardo Drechsler-Santos – Coordinator

Ricardo holds a Ph.D. in fungal biology, been involved in fungal taxonomy and systematics throughout all of his career, with recent efforts built towards Brazilian Funga conservation, trying to understand which are the threats to Brazilian fungal diversity through the application of the IUCN criteria. He also coordinates the MIND.Funga research group, being a full professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina.
