Gerronema viridilucens is a saprotrophic fungi species that grows solitary to gregarious in Eugenia fluminensis bark, and possibly other living trees. The species is the only Gerronema species that shows bioluminescent mycelium and basidiomes, emitting a bright yellowish-green light. So far, there are eight records for Gviridilucens, all inside the Parque Turístico do Alto Ribeira, in São Paulo state. The species is considered rare, and it is expected that it occurs throughout the Southern and Southeastern Atlantic Forest in Brazil, within well-preserved areas. Gviridilucens is threatened by habitat loss caused by deforestation, fire, urban development, and climate change. It is considered Vulnerable based on IUCN criterion C2a(ii), considering its known and estimated population parameters as well as its threat factors.
