Panaeolus sylvaticus is a recently described saprotrophic fungal species that is found growing on highly decomposed plant debris. So far, there are seven registers of the species from two localities, both inside the southern Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is expected that the species is distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, within seasonal semideciduous forest areas. The species and its habitat are threatened mainly by urban development, fire, deforestation, agriculture, and climate change. Based on the threats to the species and its known and estimated population parameters, Psylvaticus is considered Vulnerable based on IUCN C2a(ii) criterion.
