MIND.Funga – Monitoring and Inventorying Neotropical Diversity of Fungi

Tylopilus dunensis is a fungal species found growing on sandy soils in restinga areas. It is believed that the species stabilishes ectomycorrhizal relationships, as other species inserted in Tylopilus. There is just one occurrence of the species so far, made in Parque Estadual das Dunas de Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte state, but it is expected that the species is distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest in restinga areas. Based on sampling effort and the low occurrence number, the species is considered rare. T. dunensis is threatened by loss of habitat and habitat degradation, that are caused mainly by urban development, real state speculation, tourism, pollution and the presence of exotic species. Therefore, based in known and estimated population parameters in conjunction with threats to the species, T. dunensis is considered Endangered based on IUCN criteria C2a(ii).
