Fomitiporia atlantica is a polyporous fungi species that is found growing in recently dead trunks and stumps. It is expected that the species is pathogenic, as species within Fomitiporia and Hymenochaetaceae show pathogenicity. So far, Fatlantica was found in just two areas, in Parque Natural Municipal de Assis in Blumenau, and in São Salvador, in Rio Grande do Sul state. The species is endemic to Southern Brazil Atlantic Forest and it is considered rare, as its potential distribution has a history of great sampling effort and still there are few records. Fatlantica is threatened by urban development, deforestation, fire, exotic species introduction, and climate change. It is considered Near Threatened based on IUCN A3ce and C1+2a(ii) criteria, based on its known and estimated population parameters, as well as its threat factors.
