Marasmius horridulus is a saprotrophic species that is found growing on Micropholis williamii fallen leaves and leaves of other Amazonian unidentified species. The species is endemic to Manaus region, inside Amazonas state. So far, there are just six collections of the species, all within Amazonian Terra Firme Forest areas. The sampling efforts focused on litter-occurring species since 2005 together with the low collection number of the species suggests that it is rare. Mhorridulus occurs in metropolitan areas, being threatened mainly by habitat quality loss caused by urban development and irregular occupation of protected areas. In addition, the species is threatened by logging and agriculture. Therefore, it is considered Vulnerable under criterion C2a(ii).
