The II Workshop Brasileiro de Avaliação de Espécies de Fungos para a Lista Vermelha Global da IUCN will take place in Belo Horizonte City, during the X Congresso Brasileiro de Micologia (X CBMic: https://cbmic2024.com.br/workshop), 19-21 February 2024. The workshop is organized by IUCN Brazil Fungal Specialist Group SSC (BrazFunSG) and MIND.Funga Research Group (MICOLAB/UFSC/Brasil).
The workshop’s main objective is to engage and empower Brazilian mycologists and lichenologists in species conservation, enabling efforts to have Brazilian fungi assessed for their threat level and to be included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Global Red List of Threatened Species.
The workshop will count with invited participants from all regions of Brazil, who will propose species to be assessed for their conservation status according to IUCN guidelines. The assessment process will be overseen by three IUCN-recognized evaluators with experience in fungal species assessments. The expectation is to continue the activities initiated in the first edition of the event, which took place in 2021, where approximately 50 species were proposed, 18 of which have already been formally included on the IUCN Red List.
