Meruliopsis cystidiata is a saprobic lignicolous species, found growing on arboreal and bambusicolous species. There are just three occurrences for the species so far. It was found on the Brazilian Amazon, northern region, and in other two localities in southern Brazil. The southern Brazilian occurrences are inside the Atlantic Forest, one in a cloud forest area and the other in a small forest fragment, that is used for agronomy research and has the presence of invasive species. M. cystidiata occurs in historically threatened regions, with the Brazilian Amazon suffering large losses of coverage area due to logging. Furthermore, the Atlantic Forest is strongly fragmented and composed of secondary forests. Despite its large occurrence area, M. cystidiata is considered a rare species, and based on the threats that its population is submitted, the species was assessed as Vulnerable, based on the IUCN criteria.
