Parmotrema pachydermum

Parmotrema pachydermum is a saxicolous lichen species that grows on rocks exposed to the sun, considered a typical species of the Pampa biome. The species is endemic to Southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul state) and Uruguay, following the Pampa distribution. So far, there are no occurrences of the species in areas adjacent to its distribution area, despite few registers being made in highland areas similar to Pampa in the Rio Grande do Sul state. In total, there are 157 estimated mature individuals in the species population, and Ppachydermum is threatened by habitat loss driven by agriculture and fire. Based on threats information and known and estimated population parameters, the species is considered Critically Endangered based on the IUCN C2a(i) criteria.
