Austroboletus festivus is a boletoid species, found growing solitarily or scattered in white sand soil in restinga areas from Brazil. The species possibly forms associations with Nyctaginaceae spp. It is considered an inconspicuous species, with 17 records in four sites, all of them located in the coastal Atlantic Forest, in Pernambuco, Paraná, and Santa Catarina states. Although, it is estimated that the species occurs throughout the Atlantic coast of Brazil, in restinga areas. There are records for the species in Colombia and Guyana, but it is believed that these specimens represent other species. Afestivus is threatened by urban expansion and the presence of invasive species, such as Pinus elliottii. Furthermore, the restinga areas of Brazil are sensible, due to its fragmentation in small patches, tourism, and the lack of use regulation of these areas. Based on the threats to Afestivus population and its estimated decline, the species is considered Vulnerable based on the IUCN A2c criterion.
