Stropharia acanthocystis is a mushroom-forming saprotrophic species that is found growing in decaying wood, but that can be also found growing in soil. Since its description, about 10 years ago, were registered just 10 occurrences of the species, in Araucaria moist forest areas in Southern Brazil. It is expected that the species also occurs in a small area of northern Misiones, Argentina. The species is threatened mainly by habitat loss, with Araucaria moist forest reduced to 3% of its original area, mostly composed of small degraded fragments. Climate change is also a threat to the species, as the Araucaria moist forest could be restricted to microrefugia by 2070, due to climate changes in the climate regime. Based on the species’ threats and population, Sacanthocystis is considered Vulnerable under the IUCN assessment criteria.
