Stropharia agaricoides is a saprotrophic mushroom-forming species that grows on soil and litter in Araucaria moist forest areas. The species is considered rare, with just 5 occurrences located in southern Brazil, in Rio Grande do Sul state. It is expected that the species occurs in others Araucaria moist forest areas, as well as in a small part of northern Misiones, Argentina. The Araucaria moist forest remains with only 3% of its original area, and 80% of these areas are small disturbed fragments surrounded by croplands and grasslands. Climate change is also a threat to the Araucaria moist forest, which could be restricted to microrefugia by 2070, due to changes in climate variables. Based on the threats to Sagaricoides and its population, the species is considered Vulnerable under the IUCN assessment criteria.
