Aegis luteocontexta is a rare saprotrophic polypore species, that was described 18 years ago. It is found on dead wood and causes white rot. This species occurs in rainforests of the Neotropics, such as the Atlantic Forests of South Brazil, Dicymbe corymbosa-dominated rainforests of Guyana, and Mesoamerican forests of Costa Rica. It is expected that the species occurs in the Amazon region as well. Because of its occurrence in biodiversity Hotspots and the threats that its habitat suffers, such as logging and climate change, A. luteocontexta is assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN criteria.
