Coprinus comatus is an agaricoid decomposer species, found growing in man-made habitats, such as lawns and along gravel roads. This species naturally occurs in grasslands and meadows. It is considered a cosmopolitan species, and it has occurrences in southern and south Brazil. C. comatus is an edible fungus, being cultivated in China and other countries as food. There are no threats to the species and its population, as it is widely distributed and easily found in urban areas. Taking into account its population stability, C. comatus is considered Least Concern based on the IUCN criteria.
