Sclerogaster araripensis is a hypogeous saprotrophic species, found growing in slightly acidic soil, under a leaf and debris covering. There are just four occurrences for the species, in the Chapada do Araripe, but it is estimated that the species occurs throughout the Cerradão formation. The species habitat is under intense pressure, due to deforestation induced by agriculture and human occupation. Based on these threats, it is estimated that the S. araripensis population is in decline, making the species Endangered according to the A2c+3c+4c IUCN criteria.
