Stropharia coelhoi is a saprotrophic mushroom-forming species that is found on dead wood and soil in Araucaria moist forest areas. The species is known from only two sites, being considered rare, as its occurrence range is well sampled. It is expected that the species occurs throughout Araucaria moist forests fragments in Brazil and in a small part of northern Misiones, Argentina. Scoelhoi is threatened by habitat loss, caused by logging, fire, and agriculture. The Araucaria moist forests is reduced to 3% of its original area, and 80% of the remaining is composed by small disturbed fragments, surrounded by croplands. Despite its critical situation, only 3.1% of these fragments are inside conservation areas, which represents 0.09% of the original Araucaria moist forests area. Climate change is also a threat to the species and its habitat, as by 2070 it is projected that the Araucaria moist forest will be restricted to microrefugia, due to changes in the climate regime. Based on these threats and the decline small population numbers of Scoelhoi, the species is considered Vulnerable under the IUCN assessment criteria.
